Monday, April 20,2009. Britthaven of Graham. First day at nursing home. Walking into the nursing home this morning i was very nervous. I was unsure of what to expect. The first thing that we all did was feed the residents their breakfast in the dining room. The woman i fed ate all of her food, and gave me no problem. I am still not sure about how to count up their food intake percentages? Me and B.H. were partners for the day, and worked on the south hall checking vital signs. It is a lot easier to check vital signs on each other in the classroom. We had trouble checking blood pressures and taking temperatures on a few patients, but Mrs. B came to the rescue! We also had patients with low oxygen levels, so i had to learn how to get their levels up. I had to hook them up to their oxygen tanks, get them awake and moving, or ask them to take a few deep breaths. The scariest part of the day was when B.H. and i had to check vital signs on a woman who was in isolation. On the outside of her door was a sign that said droplet precaution and there were gloves, masks, and gowns to put on before entering. It was scary because i was not sure of the reason she was in isolation, but she turned out to be really sweet and could understand what we were saying. The CNA's and Nurse on the south hall were all really friendly, and tried to help us in any way they could. Altogether, my first day in the nursing home was a great experience, and i believe i took good care of the residents to the best of my abilities. I made a few mistakes, but that is all part of the learning process.

Thursday, April 23, 2009. Britthaven of Graham. Today was the first day that i was assigned to work on the north hall. Me and T.H. were partners and our job was to check vital signs. I felt confident in doing this because i had checked vital signs on the south hall on monday. We were finished in about an hour so we asked a CNA what else could be done. She told us that we could pass out ice to all of the residents. We had to wear gloves while giving out ice, and the gloves had to be changed after every room. After that was completed we started handing out snacks to the residents and helping to feed the ones that could not feed themselves. Me and T.H. also did various stuff for the residents such as straightening up rooms and making beds. In the dining room, there were cloggers and people playing music for everyone in the nursing home. It was a lot of fun and the residents were really enjoying themselves. Seeing this made me realize that the people living in the nursing home has very little entertainment, and the smallest thing you do for them, like talking or just visiting, means so much to them.

Day 1:
The first day at the nursing home was very scary. I was stationed in the South showers with KC. We got the opportunity to use the mechanical lift. The most important thing that i learned the first day in the nursing home was that the residents depend completly on you, the workers, for every thing that they need or do. To work in the nursing home you have to love your job and always be nice to the residents and respect them and their personal items.

2nd Day:
The second day working in the nursing home was not as scary as the first. I worked in the physical therapy department. Throughout the day i helped and observed the different procedures that the PT's went through with certain residents due to anything from just keeping their muscles stretched out to helping residents recover from a stroke. I got the chance to use my gate belt and transfer a disabled resident from their bed to a wheelchair. I really liked the physical therapy department.

3rd Day:
My third day working at the nursing home was very different from the rest. I worked on the North hall taking vital signs and providing mouth care for certain residents. While taking vital signs I learned that some residents can be very hard headed and hateful while others can be really sweet. The health care personal in this department was very understanding and helpful when i asked a question whether it be about a resident or about how to work some of the equipment. This day was very action packed and it seemed very educationally rewarding.

4th Day:
My fourth day working at the nursing home was very slow compared to the other days. I worked the South hall. I took up food trays, changed beds, and I also changed two diapers for residents that was unable to make it to the restrooms. I worked with different CNA's that was located on the south hall. Overall this day was ok but the other three days have defenally been way more action packed and educationally rewarding.

5th Day:
The fifth day working at the nursing home was different. I worked in the North Showers this time and unlike the time last time that i worked in the shower i had a resident have a vowel movement while in the lift. This resident was parallized and could not control anything. This was a very different experience and definally one that i will not forget. Over all i think that i learned even more about the showers and the different equipment this time then before.

I have to say everyone is working hard & learning a lot. the main thing they have learned is how hard it is to be a CNA, how strenuous the work is & difficult. A good attitude is the only way to be. also they have learned how the residents deal w/being there, this is their home.

Monday, April 20, 2009. Britthaven of Graham. Day 1: When I first went into the nursing home I was extremly nervous. The first thing we done was feed the residents at the nursing home their breakfast. The woman I had to feed liked to spit out her food, which I didn't know at first. So I asked one of the people that worked there if she done that often and they said that I had to put the food in her mouth, then put the drink in her mouth so she would swallow the food with it. E.P. and I were partners and we were in the north showers. I was nervous when i first went in there and Gabby showed us where everything was, how to give them a shower, put their lotion on, and to dress them. It was hard at first, but as we got more residents it became easier. We also became a lot quicker as the day went on. We only had to give women showers on the first day because most of the men were on the south hall. Some of the women put up a fight because they did not want to take a shower or they didn't want their hair washed. I learned that the older you get the more you start "freezing to death," as a lot of the women would say. Over all, my first day wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Everyone was really nice that worked at the nursing home. I definitilly made mistakes, but i think i did a pretty good job for my first day. The consructive criticism that people gave me really helped me a lot.

Thursday, April 23, 2009. Britthaven of Graham. Day 4: This is the day I had to work on North floor. I had to help make beds, take out the trash, and change diapers. The worst part was probably changing the diapers. There wasn't many to be changed, but it's still not exactly fun. We got done super early since there wasnt many diapers to change or beds to be made. I worked with Brenda and i knew her fairly well because she use to stay with my grandma when she worked with Qualicare. We got along great and she was really helpful. When I got done early S.K.,T.H., and I filled up their mugs with fresh ice. We had to change gloves after every room. After we finished with that we didn't have anything else to do so they told us to go watch the cloggers that had come to entertain the residents. Some of the residents really enjoyed the clogging and even decided to join in theirselves. Even Mrs. Butler, T.H., and B.R. danced for a few minutes. It was a pretty fun day.

Friday, April 24, 2009. Britthaven of Graham. Day 5: Today was the day i was assigned to the South showers. I learned that shaving a mans face isn't exactly the easiest thing to do... especially if they have a lot of wrinkles. It was kinda hard because you are trying to be careful so you dont cut them. We had to use a lift on one of the residents and I had never used that kind of lift before. They showed me how to use it and it turned out to be pretty easy. I also had to blowdry a womans hair, which i wasnt use to. I wasn't that nervous today because I had givin showers the first day we went. One of the women put up a fight because she didn't want to take a shower today. I though she was going to hit us but they held her arm and tried to calm her down. She finally calmed down enough for us to give her a shower. It was a pretty intersting day.

Our frist day i was very nervouse. I didnt want to get yelled at. first thing we did was feed the residents. I was scared at first because the women i fed doesnt talk so i didnt know when to stop. I picked up fast on how to take the persentages by writing how much everything was in my notepad. for the rest of the day i was partnered with C.J over on North hall changing diapers and making beds. It was an experience ill never for get because my CNA was just like Mrs.B. We used learned how to use the lift and make the beds up fast. I cant wait to see what other chalenges the nursing home brings.
